Laser Engraving Services Overview

Stoner CNC provides laser engraving and marking services using a 50-watt fiber laser and a 5-watt UV laser.

This combination allows us to engrave a wide range of materials with the correct laser type for contrast, precision, and surface integrity. Laser engraving is typically used as a secondary operation following waterjet cutting or CNC machining, but standalone engraving is available for production-sized orders when appropriate.

Who This Service Is For

  • Product brands and manufacturers

  • OEMs requiring permanent part identification

  • Customers using our cutting or machining services

  • Production and repeat engraving work

  • Traceability and compliance applications

Laser engraving is often bundled with cutting or machining services. Standalone engraving is evaluated based on quantity and application.

Laser Systems We Use

We use two dedicated laser systems to ensure the correct process is applied for each material and application. • 50-watt fiber laser – used primarily for metals and industrial marking • 5-watt UV laser – used for fine detail, plastics, coatings, and heat-sensitive materials Using the correct laser type allows us to achieve better contrast, cleaner marks, and improved surface integrity compared to a one-laser-fits-all approach.

How Laser Engraving Fits Our Workflow

Laser engraving is typically performed as a secondary operation after waterjet cutting or CNC machining. A common workflow includes: 1. Cutting or machining the part 2. Final finishing 3. Laser engraving for identification or branding This sequencing ensures engraving is applied to finished parts and remains consistent across production batches.

What Laser Engraving Is Used For

Laser engraving is used to permanently mark parts without affecting geometry, tolerances, or structural integrity. Common applications include: • Logos and branding • Serial numbers and part numbers • QR codes and data matrices • Identification marks • Cosmetic text or graphics Marks are repeatable and consistent, making laser engraving well suited for production environments.

When Laser Engraving Is the Right Choice

Laser engraving is a good fit when: • Permanent identification is required • Branding must be consistent across batches • Marks must survive handling or cleaning • Traceability is required • Engraving is needed after machining or cutting Laser engraving may not be ideal when: • Deep material removal is required • Cutting through material is needed • Printed labels are more appropriate • Quantity does not justify setup

Materials We Commonly Engrave

Using both 50W fiber and 5W UV laser systems allows us to engrave a wide range of metals, plastics, and coated materials. The correct laser type is selected based on material properties and desired mark quality. Fiber Laser Applications (50W) Best suited for durable, high-contrast marking on metals: • Aluminum (raw and anodized) • Steel and stainless steel • Titanium • Brass and copper • Tool steels • Metal tags and nameplates Fiber laser engraving produces permanent marks ideal for serial numbers, logos, QR codes, and industrial part identification. UV Laser Applications (5W) Best suited for fine detail and heat-sensitive materials: • Plastics (ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, etc.) • Coated or painted metals • Anodized finishes • Composites • Thin or heat-sensitive components UV lasers operate with minimal heat input, reducing surface damage and allowing precise marking on materials that may not respond well to fiber lasers.

File Types & Data

For laser engraving, we typically accept: • DXF or SVG vector files • PDF artwork • High-resolution images when appropriate Files should be final and to scale. If artwork preparation is required, please note this during inquiry.

Engraving Quality & Consistency

Laser engraving allows precise control over mark depth, contrast, and line width. Fiber laser engraving is typically used for durable, high-contrast metal marking. UV laser engraving is used when fine detail or minimal heat input is required. Settings are selected based on material, surface finish, and end use. Cosmetic branding and functional identification marks are treated differently to ensure consistent results.
